Charles Matthews was born in Cleburne, Texas on December 27, 1936, the son of Loe Fisher and S. T. "Sam" Matthews. With his loving daughters by his side, he passed on January 6, 2026, in Cleburne.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Teresa Roye Matthews; sons, Michael Wayne Matthews and Mikel Joe Fuller; brother, Mitch Greenberg; and stepfather, Al Greenberg.

He is survived by his daughters, Tina Matthews Herrmann and husband, Christopher, of Grandview and Toni Fuller White and husband, Robby, of Joshua, Texas; sons, Johnny Matthews and wife, Shannon, of Rio Vista, Texas, Monty McCoy and wife, Summer, of Grandview, and Michael McCoy and wife, Kia, of Crowley, Texas; mother of Johnny, Tina, and Michael Wayne, Nancy Fergason Flurry of Arkansas; second wife, mother of Toni and Mikel Joe, and his end of life care-giver, Jane Matthews of Cleburne; sisters, Betty Thomas and Jeanette Packin and husband, Don, all of California; brothers, Harry Greenberg and Melvin Greenberg; 21 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and twin greats on the way.

To his brothers and sisters in California he was their "John Wayne". To his kids and grandchildren, he was Daddy, Dad, Charlie, or Pa. To others C.W., Charles, Charlie, Charlie Boy, Mr. Matthews or whatever it was he would say, just don't call him late for dinner. Charles grew up in the Friendship area and East Cleburne. A veteran of the Army/Airforce, he was of the Baptist faith. He was a carman with the Santa Fe Railroad, a lifetime member of the Cleburne Elks Lodge and the VFW. Charlie had a witty sense of humor and was a big jokester. You better not bend over in front of him, or he would goose you! He had done that right up until the final hours of his life, even as sick as he was, he never lost his sense of humor. Still telling everyone: "Every things CHILI but the BOWL!"

He was an avid fisherman and loved the outdoors and the river. Charlie knew every rock, crook, and cranny of the Brazos River. Three of the biggest catfish he ever pulled from the Brazos was a 92 lb. yellow cat with Jane, and two on the same day - an 87 1/2 lb. with Frank Earley and then another at about 84 lbs. His fish stories were not made up, they were true and he had the pictures, fish, and fish frys to prove it.

Food was a big part of the Matthews Clan because growing up Charlie said many nights, he went to bed hungry. It was his passion to never let his kids go to bed hungry and make sure we had plenty to eat. Every night before bed was snack time and we are not talking healthy - we are talking sweets, junk, whatever we wanted that was in the house. Once a week he took everyone for ice cream and once a week there was a trip to Bill Martin's Seafood or Pancho's Mexican Food in Fort Worth. He made sure we NEVER went hungry.

The family would like to recognize Heritage Trails Nursing and Rehab in Cleburne and all the staff from the office to behind the scenes that make that place Rock. You all showed compassion and love for him and our family, and we deeply appreciate it. To his day nurse Beverly and night nurse Beverly your guidance, care, and love you gave him was more than we could have hoped for. To all the aides, you all were "his girls" and we thank you. He made it known that if he could not be at home he would be in the best place because he was treated so well, and he would tell us they could not treat me any better than they do. he was very appreciative. To Wings Over Texas Hospice, thank you for the special care your team provided for Charlie and for our family.

Some of the last pieces of advice Charlie gave Tina and Toni was to always treat others how you would want to be treated. Be good to everyone!
