Obituary for Alice L. Davis (Davis)

Alice L. Davis
Keene—Alice L. Davis, 92, of Keene, Texas passed away after battling difficult illnesses. She was most recently known for her founding of New Discovery Bible School, Inc. in Keene; anorganization that supports and coordinates a network of more than 40 church-based groups of volunteers throughout the United States and some foreign countries providing bible lessons for prisoners. It is interesting she started this organization 17 years ago at the age of 76.
Born September 19, 1919 in Berrien Springs, Michigan, Alice graduated with a music major from Emmanuel Missionary College, now known as Andrews University. Her dream was to become a church school teacher. Yet, ill health, which plagued her through the years, forced her to change direction.
She became a piano teacher and moved to Keene in 1956. She also volunteered in the children’s Sabbath School program in her local church and was thrilled with that work. She accomplished so much with that school that the General Conference, the world headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, invited her to write children’s program helps and teaching aids for the world field.
This progression led Alice toward learning how prisoners needed well written Bible lessons. Unable to find the required lessons, she developed her own set of 27 lessons which eventually led to 108 lessons in four series. The first use of the lessons was in her newly established correspondence school at the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church. After a very successful start, other churches were interested in a similar program, so she established a separate organization, the New Discovery Bible School to coordinate the work.
Alice dedicated her life to God and biblical teachings; she had a burden to teach children and adults, particularly prisoners, on how to be saved. This dedication and leadership will be missed by all who knew her.
At Alice’s request, there will not be a funeral service, but rather a graveside service at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Keene Memorial Park Cemetery. Alice also wished that instead of flowers at the graveside, contributions be made to the New Discovery Bible School, Inc, P. O. Box 614, Keene, Texas 76059.
