Donald Otis "Jack" Hamby

Graveside services for Jack Hamby, 93, of Cleburne, Texas will be conducted at 12 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2025, at Rosehill Cemetery with Mr. John Haffner and Mr. Dodd Meadows officiating.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2025, at Rosser Funeral Home.

Donald Otis (Jack) Hamby was born in Italy, Texas on April 5, 1932. His father, Orby Otis Hamby was a farmer in Italy, Texas. His mother, Ora Mae Hamby, was a homemaker. There were six children in the family: Wesley A., R. D. (Turk), Pearl, Annie, Donald Otis (Jack), and Tula Mae. Jack was the last surviving member of the family.

Jack served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska during his two-year tenure; and he often talked about the 70 degree below zero temperatures. He was the catcher for his company’s baseball team, and they competed and won against many other teams on the base. After his honorable discharge, he worked briefly at General Dynamics in Ft. Worth, Texas. He took the Civil Service Test and soon began his 38-year career with the U.S. Post Office in Cleburne, Texas. Jack held positions in the Post Office as a City Mail Carrier, a Service Representative at the Main Office Counter and concluded as a Rural Mail Carrier. Jack was proud of his career with the Post Office, he really enjoyed his customers and tried to take care of each one. Jack often spoke of the many friends he had made among his co-workers and the residents of his mail routes.

Jack met his wife, Margaret Ann, in Ft. Worth and they were married on April 19, 1956, in Sand Flat, Texas. They resided in Cleburne, Texas, married for 68 years until the time of her death in 2024, and he remained there until his passing.

Jack is survived by two sons, Mike Richards and his wife, Betty, of Georgetown, Texas and Terry Richards and his wife, Paula, of Sulphur Springs, Texas; cherished grandson, Clay Richards of Ft. Worth, Texas; granddaughter, Jennifer Raffety and her husband, Brian, of Pearland, Texas; and great-granddaughter, Hannah Raffety and great-grandson, Jake Raffety, both of Galveston, Texas.

Jack will be remembered as a wonderful husband and father, as a man of integrity, dedicated to his family and friends, and a hard-working role model. He was a lifelong fan of baseball, football, and basketball and known as an avid Dallas Mavericks basketball fan.

He enjoyed his morning coffee group, attending Granbury Street Church of Christ, and eating catfish on Friday nights at Sand Flat.
