Doyla Ruth
Duke
Sep 22, 1944 — Oct 15, 2026
Thursday
Rosser Funeral Home
1:00 - 2:00 pm (Central time)
Doyla Ruth Duke was welcomed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the morning of October 15, 2026. Doyla (née Davis) was born on September 22, 1944, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Ruth Brown Janes and Doyle Janes. In 1952, her mother married N.W. "Scoop" Davis Jr., who raised Doyla and her older sister Kay in Haltom City, Texas, until their move to Colleyville in 1973.
Doyla attended Haltom High School, where she was a cheerleader, football and band sweetheart, and received many other honors, including being named the first LaFiesta Queen. Doyla loved to draw, paint, sing, and garden. She was friendly, outgoing, full of life, and had a genuine love for people and animals.
In the summer between the sixth and seventh grades, Doyla met her first love, B. Wayne Duke. They dated from junior high through high school. In 1962, Doyla married O.D. "Dee" Steward Jr., and they had two daughters.
In addition to raising her children, Doyla participated in PTA and school events. In the early 1970s, she earned a real estate broker's license and was the youngest to do so in Tarrant County. Then Doyla launched a successful real estate business with her former husband. In the late 1970s, she completed nursing home administrator certification coursework at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1980, she earned her license and later co-owned nursing homes.
After their respective divorces, Doyla and Wayne crossed paths again. Doyla married her childhood sweetheart and the love of her life on February 24, 1995. Years later, when teaching, Wayne described their reunion in a high school newspaper interview: "Their love started with a phone call. Ever since then, they have been like two peas in a pod." This year, Wayne and Doyla, whom he affectionately referred to as Goober, celebrated 31 years of marriage.
Together, Doyla and Wayne played golf, traveled, attended church, enjoyed entertaining, and created a loving home in Cleburne, Texas, for their blended family, beloved cats, and a beautiful flower garden. Doyla loved flowers and bright colors, which fit her personality. She was a hoot and a true Southern belle. One of her last sentiments was, "I am a lucky girl." And that she was-full of life and surrounded by love.
Doyla was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Scoop Davis, Doyle and Leona Janes; great-grandparents Harvey and Linnie Janes, Alfred and Virginia Brown; and a younger sister, Kathryn Janes. She is survived by her loving husband, Wayne Duke; sister, Kay Davis Howington; daughters Natalie Steward, Melissa Steward Orr; grandsons Aubrey Orr, Elliot Orr (Paula); great-granddaughters Charlotte Orr, Victoria Orr; nieces Dr. Monica Luebke, Teressa Howington Hicks. Also surviving are her stepchildren Jacki Duke Estes (Reggie), Cindy Duke Young (Jeff), Joann Duke Goodman (Steve), Christy Duke Keller (Kris); sixteen step-grandchildren; fifteen step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 2026, in the Rosser Funeral Home Chapel.
