Funeral services for George Wayne Reid, 95, of Keene, Texas will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2026, in the Keene Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel with Pastor Michael Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in Keene Memorial Park Cemetery.
Born September 19, 1930, George Wayne Reid lived in Oklahoma until moving to Nebraska to attend Union College where he received a BA in Religion.
He moved to Washington DC where he received a Masters in Religion and a Masters of Divinity in 1953 and 1955.
He married Columbia Union College music major Julia Cordwell in 1955 and the couple moved to Oklahoma where he pastored several churches and their family grew with Deborah in 1958, and George Jr. in 1960.
In 1967 the family moved to Keene, Texas where he accepted a position teaching religion rising to the Chairman of the Religion Dept at what is now Southwestern Adventist University.
While teaching at SWAU George studied at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and was granted a PhD in Theology.
In 1982 Dr. Reid moved to Washington DC where he worked as Associate Editor of the Review and Herald until he assumed the position of Director of the Biblical Research Institute in 1984.
For three decades he worked at BRI, traveling, teaching, researching and sitting on and chairing many boards.
With his wife in failing health, they moved back to Keene around 2021.
George passed away May 2, 2026.
He is survived by his children Deborah McLaughlin and George Reid Jr. and wife, Patricia; grandchildren, Donald (Ace) McLaughlin and wife, Kalee, Alexander McLaughlin and wife, Rochelle, Andrew Reid, James Goodner, Grant Goodner and wife, Laura, and Cristal Goodner; and great grandchildren Cora, Hayes, Sophie, Eva, and AJ McLaughlin; and Makenzi, Hunter, Ciara, and Alexander Goodner.
