Joyce Black passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 in Fort Worth, Texas. She was born in Haynesville, Louisiana on January 7, 1945, the daughter of Mattie Karlene (Duke) and Vincent Peter DeFatta.
Joyce and Billy Black were married on August 29, 1970 in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was a teacher with the Irving ISD for over 20 years and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Alvarado. They were longtime members of Plymouth Park Baptist Church in Irving where she taught GA’s for over 30 years and 3rd grade Sunday school for many years.
Joyce also had a passion for wildflowers. She never went on a road trip without a sharpshooter shovel and a bag to dig up wildflowers and transplant them to her garden. She and her mother (and various family members) went on numerous wildflower hunts and always came back full of stories and plants. She shared that love of plants by educating people about God’s beauty.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Karen Kerley; and granddaughter, Emily Kate Black.
She is survived by her husband, Billy Black of Alvarado; sons, Chris Black and wife, Kristi, of Grand Prairie, Texas and Jeff Black and wife, Karen, of Flower Mound, Texas; daughter, Alyssa Dotson and husband, Gentry, of Grandview, Texas; brother, Vincent DeFatta and wife, Sandy, of Fort Smith, Arkansas; sister, Jude DeFatta and spouse, Logan Jaeren, of Port Orchard, Washington; and five grandchildren, Sydney Black, Jackson Dotson, Carter Black, Mattie Dotson, and Cooper Black
